Vision Statement

Mission Statement

   The vision of Oakland Elementary is to nurture the promise   of our children.

 

The mission of Oakland Elementary is to inspire and empower all children to learn, hope, dream, contribute, excel, create, and appreciate.

 

Value Statements

  •   Staff will provide a rigorous language arts and math curriculum every day.
  •   Staff will provide a daily 30-minute STAR reading/math block to give students extra opportunities to math problem solve and  to close read complex text daily.
  •   Staff will utilize math and language arts assessment data to provide extra targeted learning opportunities for students below, at, and above grade level every three weeks.
  •   Staff will celebrate student learning daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly.

Goals

  •  By Spring 2017, 90% of students in grades 3-4 will meet ICCRS in ELA as measured by ISTEP+.
  •  By Spring 2017, Oakland will receive bonus points for Overall, Bottom 25% and Top 75% subgroups on Indiana A-F Report Card.
  • By Spring 2017, 85% of students in grades 3-4 will meet ICCRS in Math as measured by ISTEP+.
  • By Spring 2017, Oakland will receive bonus points for Overall, Bottom 25% and Top 75% subgroups on Indiana A-F Report Card.

ELA Strategies

Math Strategies

  • Provide explicit daily instruction in at least one of the 7 Comprehension Strategies (Background Knowledge, Predictions/Text Structure, Visualization, Questions, Summarizing, Inferences, Fix-Up Strategies).

     

  • Provide daily explicit instruction in planning writing for multiple purposes i.e. written response, prompt writing, journal writing, etc.
  • Provide daily opportunities to stretch independent reading level (choral reading, partner reading, independent reading, close reading, text dependent questions, oral discussions, overarching question of the story, teacher think-aloud, retelling of text from start to finish.

     

  • Provide daily explicit systematic instruction in at least one of the five components of reading in the classroom and STAR.
  • Provide weekly opportunities to build reading comprehension with complex text using thematic texts and a gradual release of responsibility.
  • Provide weekly teacher think-aloud about solving math problems.

     

  • Provide weekly oral discussion on problem solving including mistakes e.g. math problem solvers of the week.

     

  • Provide weekly opportunities for students to receive explicit instruction on common underlying text structures in word problems and use explicitly taught problem solving strategies.

     

  • Provide weekly opportunity to explicitly teach Pre-taught method, find question, identify key vocabulary, use a strategy, set it up, solve and check and release of responsibility.

     

  • Provide weekly opportunities to work on math problems in pairs/small group-release responsibility-give them the chance to struggle with problems and re-think solution after student answers are given.
